When Your Heart Breaks and God Holds You Together

Last Friday is a day I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

In just a matter of seconds, everything changed.

Our six-year-old chocolate Labrador, who has been part of our family since he was just eight weeks old, bit my sweet baby on the face. It happened so quickly that I barely had time to process what was unfolding before we were rushing out the door to the emergency room.

As a mom, there are moments you pray you’ll never have to experience, and this was one of them.

We spent the day at the children’s hospital surrounded by doctors, nurses, and specialists. While we waited, my mind raced through every possible outcome. I prayed constantly, asking God to protect my little boy and to give us peace while we waited for answers.

Meanwhile, life outside the hospital kept moving. My oldest son had just finished youth camp at church, and my wonderful in-laws stepped in to pick him up so he wouldn’t have to worry while we stayed with his little brother. I am so grateful for family who shows up without hesitation when life takes an unexpected turn.

After what felt like an endless day, we finally received the news we had been praying for.

Our sweet boy needed three stitches in his eyelid and nine stitches in his lip, but by the grace of God, his eye was completely unharmed.

Praise God.

Those words have carried so much weight for me this week.

Watching your child be treated for an injury is something no parent ever wants to experience. Seeing him frightened, hearing him cry, and feeling completely helpless left my heart aching. Yet even in the middle of one of the hardest days we’ve had as a family, God’s faithfulness was evident.

He surrounded us with compassionate medical staff.

He provided family when we needed help.

He protected our little boy’s eyesight.

And He reminded me that He was present even in the chaos.

The amazing thing is that my little one has already moved on.

Just a day later he was smiling, laughing, playing, and exploring as if nothing had happened. Children have a remarkable ability to heal—not only physically but emotionally. Their resilience continually amazes me.

As adults, we often carry our wounds for years. We replay painful moments, question ourselves, and allow fear to settle into our hearts. But children have a way of embracing today without carrying all the weight of yesterday.

Watching him has been a reminder that healing is often found one day at a time.

Today, this sweet little boy turns one year old.

One whole year.

It feels impossible that the tiny baby I held in my arms has become a curious, adventurous little toddler. He is incredibly smart, full of personality, always exploring, and constantly making us laugh. He loves to figure things out, watches everything around him, and has already taught me so much about joy.

His birthday looks a little different than I imagined it would just a week ago. There are stitches on his face that will remind us of a frightening day, but there is also so much to celebrate.

We celebrate God’s protection.

We celebrate healing.

We celebrate another year of life.

And we celebrate the precious gift this little boy is to our family.

Motherhood has a way of holding joy and heartbreak in the very same hands. Sometimes we experience both within the same week. It reminds me how deeply we love our children and how desperately we need the Lord in every season.

This week has reminded me that while I cannot control every circumstance, I can trust the One who holds every moment. God’s care for our family did not disappear in the emergency room. He was there long before we arrived, and He remained faithful every step of the way.

Today, my prayer is one of gratitude.

Thank You, Lord, for protecting my son.

Thank You for the doctors and nurses who cared for him.

Thank You for family who stepped in when we needed them most.

Thank You for another year with this precious little boy.

Happy first birthday, my sweet baby. You are deeply loved, wonderfully made, and one of God’s greatest gifts to our family. I can’t wait to watch the plans He has for your life unfold.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
